Effat University is named after Queen Effat Al-Thunayyan Al-Saud (God rest her soul).  Queen Effat was a pioneer and advocate for women’s education in the Kingdom, founding Dar Al-Hanan – the first school for girls – in 1955, and establishing Effat College in 1999. Effat College became a university in 2009, and both its mission and vision statements pay tribute to its founder by speaking of upholding the “legacy of Queen Effat”.  The graduates of Effat University are “living ambassadors of the educational and cultural legacy of Queen Effat.”  But what exactly is this educational and cultural legacy?  The proposed research chair aims to deepen our understanding of the educational and cultural legacy of Queen Effat, and to share her inspiring story of visionary leadership and philanthropy more broadly.

Goals

  1. Provide a concrete frame of reference for the ‘Effat Legacy’ through conducting research, thereby providing a deeper sense of who Queen Effat was, and what her ideas and vision were.
  2. Create repositories of information regarding Queen Effat, in order to share it in an accessible format with Effat University community and with the broader local, national, and international communities.
  3. Educate all who come to Effat University about the struggle to promote education for young women in Saudi Arabia and the monumental contribution of Queen Effat.
  4. Link the research produced by the scientific chair in a meaningful way to the Queen Effat Citizenship Award (QECA).  This coveted award is an honor bestowed on one exceptional, well-rounded student each year that embodies the educational vision of Queen Effat. The Queen Effat Citizenship Award winner displays leadership, a passion for life-long learning, a sense of civic responsibility, dedication to community service, and subject matter expertise.
  5. Establish an annual research grant in Queen Effat’s name (the Effat Legacy Research Grant) intended to support an outstanding national or international female scholar in one or more of the following areas: the advancement of women’s education, curriculum development, Middle Eastern studies, international dialogue and cross-cultural communication, and the empowerment of women and youth.
