Effat University Celebrates Opening of
Virtual Reality Research Center
Under the patronage of HRH Princess Lolowah Al-Faisal, Vice Chairperson of the Board of Trustees and General Supervisor of Effat University, the Virtual Reality Research Center was inaugurated on December 13. 

The inauguration ceremony was attended by HRH Princess Lolowah Al-FaisalHRH Princess Noura Bint Turki Al-Faisal, Member of Effat University's Board of Trustees, Shaikh Saleh Al-Turki, President of Nesma Holding, Dr. Haifa Jamal Al-Lail and a number of Effat University's eminent faculty and visiting researchers. 

The VR Research Center performs research and provides state-of-the-art technology related to VR modelling and simulation. The Center has also attracted a number of researchers and scholars across various disciplines such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Psychology, Medicine, and others.

Virtual Reality Research Center Invites Academic & Business Experts to Discuss Collaboration Opportunities 

Several decision makers, research scientists and senior professionals from academic institutions such as King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST)Umm Al-Qura UniversityUniversity of Washington in Seattle, University of Miami in Florida, as well as companies such as MicrosoftSonyMidwam Edutainment and Visual Experience visited Effat University as part of the inauguration ceremony of its Virtual Reality Research Center.

The meeting generated a fruitful discussion on the potential collaboration opportunities between the University and industry in terms of advancing research in VR to serve both the local and global research communities. 
Effat University Participates in Jeddah's SASG 2015 Conference 

Saudi Arabia Smart Grid Conference (SASG 2015) was held on December 7th at Jeddah's Hilton Hotel. Both Effat faculty and students participated with a number of significant research projects. Participants were:

The Smart Grid Conference is an annual event that brings together researchers and practitioners and covers a variety of topics such as: Smart Grids, Green Information and Communication Technologies, Sustainability, Energy-Aware Systems, etc. 
Effat Organizes a Panel Discussion on Women in Engineering at SASG Conference

As part of the Saudi Arabia Smart Grid Conference held earlier this month, a panel discussion was held to discuss women engineers. The panel which was titled "Women in Engineering in Saudi Arabia: Opportunities & Challenges" was moderated by Dr. Malak Al-Nory, Dean of Graduate Studies & Research and Dr. Haifa Jamal Al-Lail as speaker. The panel also included other speakers from both academia and business.

Effat University Participates in the Second International Conference Organized by Qiyas

Effat University's President, Dr. Haifa Jamal Al-Lail, along with a group of Effat faculty participated at the Second International Conference for Assessment & Evaluation organized by the National Center for Assessment in Higher Education (Qiyas).

The conference which took place in Riyadh on December 1st aimed to address issues related to education quality assurance, assessment and evaluation. Effat participants were:
  • Dr. Haifa Jamal Al-Lail presenting a paper titled "Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes Based on Institutional Core Values" and co-authored by Dr. Houria Oudghiri. 
  • Dr. Tayeb Brahimi presenting a paper titled "The Impact of Accreditation on Student Outcomes" and co-authored by Dr. Akila Sarirete and Dr. Rania Ibrahim.
  • Ms. Terumi Taylor presenting a paper titled "Utilizing Delphi research method to enhance the quality of general education through the exploration of factors influencing academic achievement" and co-authored by Dr. Khadija Itani.
  • Dr. Amani Gandour presenting a paper titled "Course Assessment as a Means of Linking SLO’s to PLO’s" and co-authored by Ms. Azza Salih
Research Activities
Dr. Hafedh GharbiEnglish & Translation Department, published a book titled "The Neoconservative Movement: A History."

Dr. Wassim Daghrir, English & Translation Department, published a book titled "Media and the Foreign Policy."

Dr. Abdulhamit Subasi, Computer Science Department, published a paper titled "Classification of the Cardiotocogram Data for Anticipation of Fetal Risks Using Machine Learning Techniques" in the Journal of Applied Soft Computing. (Impact Factor: 2.810).

Dr. Mohammed Asmatullah Khan and Dr. Omar Kittaneh, Electrical & Computer Engineering Department, published a paper titled "Stopping Criterion for Anisotropic Image Diffusion" in the international journal for Light and Electron Optics." (Impact Factor: 0.677)

ECE Student Co-Authors a Paper Now Indexed in
Cornell University Library

Electrical and Computer Engineering student, Nojood Almayouf, has co-authored a paper titled "Existence of Positive Solutions for an Approximation of Stationary Mean-Field Games."

The paper was a result of a collaborative effort between students from different countries such as Saudi Arabia, Poland, Italy, Argentina, China, Japan, Mexico, and others. The full paper is now indexed in one of the highly-distinguished repositories, Cornell University Library.

Internal Grant Winners 
Congratulations to the following faculty for receiving both research and conference participation grants:
  • Dr. Zaki Mallasi - Research Grant - for his project: "SBRC Responsive Facade Prototype - Integrating Environmental Receptors with Building Information Model."
  • Dr. Florabel Nieva - Conference Participation Grant - for presenting a paper at the 10th European Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Italy.
  • Dr. Mohamed Shehata - Conference Participation Grant - for presenting a paper at the IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits & Systems in Cairo, Egypt.
  • Dr. Hossameldin ElBoromaly - Conference Participation Grant - to present a paper at the upcoming Fourth International Architectural Conversation Conference and Exhibition 2016 in Dubai, U.A.E. 
Faculty Submit KACST Research Proposals for Internal Review 
The Deanship of Graduate Studies & Research received a number of research proposals to be internally reviewed and later submitted to KACST's Annual Research Grants Program.

The proposals came from both the College of Engineering and the College of Architecture & Design and covered the following topics:

- Cloud Computing
- Wireless Networks
- Image Processing
-Electronic Measurement and Instrumentation
- Movement Network Design
- Environmental Design of Buildings
- Plaza Design

Two Effat Student Groups Selected for KAUST's Winter Enrichment Program Poster Competition 
Two student groups from ECE department were selected to participate at KAUST's Winter Enrichment Program Poster Competition. The highly-competitive research competition which targets undergraduate students from around the world provides students with the opportunity to present their research projects and spend one week at KAUST.

The students were selected from a very competitive pool of applications including students from KFUPM, MIT and Stanford. These student research projects were: 

1. Poster Title: Underwater Video Signal Transmission via Laser Beam Student Participants: Asrar Damdam, Hedayah Menkabo, Areej Sabo. 

2. Poster Title: Visible Light Communication
Student Participants: Raghad Al-Sulami and Bashair Al-Sulami

Leader of KAUST's IVU Lab Visits Effat University

Dr. Bernard Ghanem, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Leader of the Image & Video Understanding Lab at KAUST visited Effat University on December 2nd.

This came as part of a series of seminars provided by the University's Virtual Reality Research Center. During his visit, Dr. Ghanem delivered a talk on KAUST's lab and gave an overview of the research done there. This included discussion on important topics related to computer vision, machine learning communities, 3D scene understanding, and others.
