Digital Library Inaugurated at Effat University
With a generous support from Hassan Abbas Al-Sharbatly Charity Foundation, the Digital Library was inaugurated on Tuesday, March 8th at Effat University's Library and Cultural Museum

The event was attended by a number of academic and business professionals including Dr. Haifa Jamal Al-Lail, President of Effat University, Mr. Abdullatif Alnuqali, Alsharbatly Charity Foundation, Dr. Malak Al-Nory, Dean of Graduate Studies & Research, Mr. Faisal Alaquil, Construction Products Holding Company and others.

The Digital Library is equipped with 70 laptops, 70 iPads and up-to-date computer terminals serving as the digital hub for students where they can have access to all the digital learning resources, work on research papers and checkout laptops or iPads.
Effat University Granted Patent for Method for Vessel Extraction

On March 1st, the US Patent and Trademark Office granted Effat University a patent for the invention of method for vessel extraction.

Registered under the number 9-275-455 and for
Dr. Mohammed Asmatullah Khan, Leader of the Biometrics & Sensor Systems Lab, the patent was granted for a method for improving the detection of low-contrast and narrow-width vessels. The core of the method is the idea of developing a hybrid approach of combining matched-filter responses with that of directional filter bank.  

Congratulations to Dr. Asmatullah and to Effat University on this achievement.
Upcoming Learning & Technology Conference Features President of KACST & Founder of i2 Institute as Keynote Speakers
The 13th annual Learning & Technology conference will feature Prince Dr. Turki bin Saud bin Mohammed Al-Saud, President of King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology (KACST) and Dr. Hayat Sindi, Founder and CEO of i2 Institute.

In 2015, Prince Dr. Turki was appointed as President of KACST, Saudi Arabia's leading government organization in science, research and development. He received his Ph.D in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University, USA.

Dr. Hayat Sindi is a Saudi Scientist, entrepreneur and medical researcher with an extensive record of accomplishments in the fields of medicine and biotechnology. Founded in 2011, i2 Institute aims at creating an ecosystem of entrepreneurship and social innovation for scientists, technologists and engineers in the Middle East and beyond.

The annual conference will be held on the 10 - 11 April 2016 under the theme "3, 4, 5 Dimensions & Beyond: Immerse into the Learning Environment!"

Dr. Sanna Dhair, English & Translation Department, published an article titled "From Flat to Round Men: Male Characters in Saudi Women's Fiction" in the journal of Middle East Women's Studies, Duke University Press.
Dr. Hayssam Dahrouj, Electrical & Computer Engineering Department, published two papers titled "Cost-Effective Backhaul Solutions for Next Generation Wireless Systems" and "Resource Allocation in Heterogeneous Cloud Radio Access Networks: Advances and Challenges" in IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine. (Impact Factor: 5.417).
Dr. Abdulhamit Subasi, Information Systems Department, published a paper titled "Comparison of decision tree algorithms for EMG signal classification" in the journal of Biomedical  Signal Processing and Control (ISI) - (Impact Factor: 1.419).
Dr. Noraini Yusof, Architecture Department, published a paper titled "Linking the environmental practice of construction firms and the environmental behaviour of practitioners in construction projects" in the Journal of Cleaner Production (ISI) - (Impact Factor: 3.844)
Dr. Wadee Al Halabi, Computer Science Department, published two papers titled "Qualitative spatial reasoning methodology to determine the particular domain of a set of geographic objects" and "Research Gate: An Effective Altmetric Indicator for Active Researchers?" in the journal of Computers in Human Behavior (ISI) - (Impact Factor: 2.694).
Dr. Muhammad Khan, Entrepreneurship Department, published a paper titled "Mapping entrepreneurship ecosystem of Saudi Arabia" in the journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Sustainable Development.
Excellence in Research Award: Call for Applications
The Deanship of Graduate Studies & Research is pleased to announce Effat University’s Excellence in Research Award for this academic year.

The annual award is offered as a token of recognition for outstanding research achievements and is presented at the graduation ceremony. The award consists of a certificate signed by the President with Queen Effat Excellence Award stamp as well as SR 5000 as a monetary prize.

ECE Students Participate in KAUST's Conference on Computational Imaging and Visualization 
On Wednesday, March 2nd, a group of students from the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department participated at the
Computational Imaging and Visualization Conference organized by and held at King Abdullah University for Science & Technology (KAUST).

The students, Omniah Hasanain, Noor BaFageeh, Asmaa El-Khatib, presented their project on Google Glass and sensory impairments. The project which is a collaborative effort between Effat University and KAUST is supervised by Dr. Hayssam Dahrouj, Electrical & Computer Engineering Department, and Dr. Bernard Ghanem, Computer, Electrical and Mathematical Sciences & Engineering at KAUST.

The project investigates the role of wearable devices that are equipped with multi-modal sensors such as Google Glass to assist individuals with hearing or visual impairments in identifying objects or sounds in their surrounding environment.

Leader of Design Computation Lab Participates at an International Conference Organized by INCONET-GCC2

Dr. Zaki Mallasi, Leader of the Design Computation Lab, participated at an international conference organized by INCONET-GCC2 in Muscat, Oman. Dr. Mallasi presented a paper titled "Prototyping Future Smart City Forms: Combining Sensory Technology and BIM Simulation to Visualize Environmental Impact."

The conference was held under the theme "Collaboration for Innovation; Linking GCC and EU" and focused on energy and smart cities as well as mutual cooperation opportunities between the two regions. 

INCONET-GCC2 is a project sponsored by European Commission to establish grounds for collaboration in the fields of science, technology and innovation between the European Union and Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
ARCH & ECE Students Participate at an Undergraduate Research Forum 
A group of students from both Architecture andElectrical & Computer Engineering departments participated at the Second Undergraduate Research Forum held at Prince Sultan University (PSU) in Riyadh. Participants were:

Asmaa Awad, Bushra Khalifa, Noor al-Huda al-Chwikani, Rawan Shawesh and Shatah Sharafuddin from Architecture Department. Paper titled "Behind the Scenes: Architecture in Films."

Raghad Alsulami and Bashair Alsulami from Electrical & Computer Engineering Drepartment. Paper titled "Visible Light Communication."

Bayan Alnahhas from Electrical & Computer Engineering Department. Paper titled "Red Laser Characterization for Smart Solid State Lighting."

The Undergraduate Research Forum is an annual event organized by PSU and a unique opportunity for students to showcase achievements and discuss research projects.
Effat-KAUST Collaborative Research Project Investigates Role of Cloud Computing in Managing High Data Demands
In a joint effort between Effat University and KAUST, a group of researchers explored the role of cloud computing algorithms in managing high data demands. The team included Dr. Hayssam Dahrouj, Electrical & Computer Engineering Department, and a number of researchers from KAUST. Researchers "investigated an alternative cloud-radio access network (CRAN) that uses the cloud to solve a particular allocation problem—how to schedule users to resource blocks and simultaneously optimizing transmitter power while giving base-stations control over other radio resources, such as signal processing."

Research findings were included in a paper titled "Coordinated Scheduling and Power Control in Cloud-Radio Access Networks" and published in the journal of IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications.

Effat Faculty Submit Proposals to KACST's Small Grant Program

A number of Effat faculty submitted propsals to the small grant program funded by King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology. 

Seven proposals have been submitted covering a variety of topics and collaborative projects in engineering and architecture. Applicants are:
  • Dr. Zain Balfagih, Information Systems Department, for a project titled "Fast Handover Protocol for Network-Based Distributed Mobility Management in Vehicular Environment"
  • Dr. Mohammed Kaosar, Computer Science Department, for a project titled "A cloud based privacy preserving vehicle detection and recognition scheme for missing vehicles"
  • Dr. Mohammed Asmatullah Khan, Biometrics & Sensor Systems Lab, for a project titled "Improved Nodule Detection in Chest X-Rays using PCA Filters"
  • Dr. Basem Abu Izneid, Electrical & Computer Engineering Department, for a project titled "Novel Microcontroller Instrument utilising Thermobio-Optic Technique for Quality Assessment of Edible Oils"
  • Dr. Mady Mohamed, Architecture Department, for a project titled "Investigating the adaptability of the traditional building techniques in Jeddah's new residential buildings"
  • Dr. Ahmed Shehata, Architecture Department, for two projects titled "Toward More Efficient Use of Al-Masjed Al-Haram Plazas" and "Identifying the Natural Walkable Network in Jeddah"
